The main characters, played by Ryan Gosling and George Clooney, are involved in a campaign to win the Democratic presidential nomination. The Clooney character is a fairly typical liberal Democrat. His staff, primarily Gosling and Hoffman, are able, professional, and devoted to their candidate's success. The thing is, the staffers lack a moral compass. When a rival Democrat candidate's staffer (played by Giamatti) plays a dirty trick on them, they have no ethical background to guide them. Their responses are ingenious, but ultimately flawed. It does not help that their candidate is fairly amoral himself.
